George in caving days

Created by Roy 3 years ago

When I joined CSS in the mid 1960s Geo was in a nicknaming everyone mode. I can't even remember what he dubbed me, and I don't suppose anyone else can, but when you had a Geo nickname you were an accepted member of the club. You could never tell who would turn up and one day a very attractive girl called Pat Dymond showed up. Naturally Geo called her "Twink" long before she became Mrs. Geo Fletcher and it is the one that everyone still uses.

A group of rock-climbers within the caving club spent a lot of time in Snowdonia and rented a former plate-layers hut beside the railway near Tremadoc from the label of which they called themselves "Gang 35". Geo has stayed in touch with all of us over all these decades. It is part of who he was that he has done so.

Sadly marriage took Geo and Twink away to Cheshire and we saw a lot less of them thereafter, to Nantwich's gain. However, Geo had spent a regular holiday with Tony Payne at the caving hut when Hilary and Heather were young and he had recently revived "The Golden Oldies" for a reunion dinner in Crickhowell each autumn. When illness prevented him travelling south anymore, he asked me to take over setting it up, which I still do; i even managed to get a few of us together between lockdowns last year.

You were a one-off Geo and we will always remember you.
